General transcription (podcasts, interviews) requires 60–75 WPM with 98%+ accuracy. Medical transcription: 65–80 WPM + medical terminology knowledge. Legal transcription: 70–85 WPM. Court reporting (stenotype) is different (225+ WPM). Transcription is about listening and typing simultaneously – a 65 WPM typist may only produce 45 WPM of clean transcript due to pauses and rewinds. Many companies require a 10–15 minute audio test. Speed alone isn't enough; you need excellent grammar, punctuation, and editing skills. Aim for 70+ WPM to be competitive in general transcription.
